Reserve Products in a Basket for an Amount of Time in TRIMIT B2C Webshop

No More Out of Stock at Checkout

Most online shoppers have experienced that one or more items that they had added to their baskets, were sold to other customers and set to out of stock while they were shopping for other products.

Such experiences can leave customers disappointed and frustrated.

To avoid situations where customers cannot be sure that they can actually buy what they have added to their baskets, TRIMIT has developed a functionality called “Item Reservation” for the TRIMIT B2C Webshop. This functionality can reserve items in customers' baskets while they are actively using the webshop, and for a set amount of time if the customers are inactive.

The following is a simplified description of how TRIMIT Item Reservation Management works.

Item Reservation Settings

In the B2C Webshop, an administrator can enable or disable Item Reservation. When the functionality is enabled, the following values can be set:

  • Number of minutes before a basket expiration notification is shown.
The number of minutes before a customer is asked if he is still interested in the items in the basket.
  • Number of minutes before a basket expires.
The max number of minutes of inactivity allowed before a basket expires.
  • Max number of available items shown.
The max quantity on stock a customer sees for a specific item e.g. (5+).

Note: Gift cards are not affected by the Item Reservation functionality.

Settings Elaborated

With Item Reservation enabled, customers can shop in confidence, knowing that the items they have in their baskets are safe as long as they are actively shopping.

Customers who become inactive for a while, get notified if the time limits set by the webshop administrator are reached.

Basket Expiration Notification

If a customer becomes inactive, he gets a notification asking if he is still interested in the items in the basket.

If the customer closes the notification message and still does not actively use the webshop, the item reservation time continues to count down until the basket expires.

Basket Expires

If a customer is inactive for more time than the webshop administrator has set as the time limit for basket reservation, the reserved items become available to other customers.

The customer will see a message about the time limit having been reached, and he is encouraged to review the items in the basket. If the customer goes to the basket, he will see the added items but their availability is unknown until he updates the basket.

If a customer updates an expired basket there are 3 scenarios:

  • Item is still fully available: no changes to the basket
  • Item is partly available: the item line will be highlighted and a notification will be shown together with mentioning the current available quantity next to the actual quantity.
  • Item is no longer available: If no items are available, a basket update will remove the item from the basket. If items have become available, the line is activated.

The Shopping Experience Summary

TRIMIT's Item Reservation functionality allows customers to buy the products they have added to their baskets as long as they are actively using the webshop.

Customers, who become inactive for a while, get notified. If they confirm their continued interest in the items in the basket, the reservation is updated.

If the customer does not react to the notification, the basket reservation will expire when the time limit is reached. However, the items are not removed from the basket, and the customer can update the basket see if the items are still available.
